A3/4 a single sheet publication.
Issue 9 of A3/4 is about to be sent out to all subscribers. Suzanne O’Haire has been forced with the challenge of offering something in the two dimensions rather than her standard three. I enjoyed offering this limited opportunity to her, yet she still somehow managed to produce something akin to her normal practice.
Suzanne says; Collecting references and others' ideas, from the scientific to the mythical, stirs endless curiosity for me. One such example is Birkhoff’s ‘Aesthetic Measure’, which has a formula defining the supposed beauty of an art form. A strand of this theory ventures into notions of symmetry. The identical mirroring of something or an arrangement of objects irks me and I’m not sure why; perhaps it feels contrived, too perfect. My work can take a time to find its place, a balance that feels it has its own autonomy and not entirely controlled by me. For a time, this equation has tickled me, so I decided to embrace what I usually try avoid, go full on symmetry! M = f (OC)
Flat work is definitely out of my comfort zone; I’m all about 3D objects and what they may say in a physical space. For various reasons, lately my studio base has been just out of reach, so working on this piece felt like a challenge I could carry around with me. I started by photographing a selection of objects I had, then played with these on a screen, much like I would do normally on a floor or wall: shifting around, adding to, paring right back.
As usual just 60 issues produced, each with a hand written formula on the back (in pencil). All on the way to subscribers this week and available from website soon, just £3.50 each.
